Wollaton v Lambley

Newark Alliance Division 5 Sunday 2 May 2010

Conditions could only be described as baltic, overcast with temperatures around 10 degrees.  Crossers lent out sweaters to around half the team, one of the oppo fielded in a beanie hat and the Fish’s turned up dressed for an arctic expedition to watch their lad play.  Ed Savill almost managed a full 33 players for 3 games, only for a drop off at the last minute which meant the home side only had 10 of which 4 were making their senior debuts.  The good news was that Lambley only had 9 who duly won the toss and decided to bat.

Fishy and Hasnan opened up.  Fishy came from the top end but struggled with the wind which was “in the wrong direction” and was not as consistent as he hoped.  Hasnan at the other having got at least one of his contact lenses took the first 2 wickets, and after a 5 over spell, was replaced by the previous days’ centurion Big Sunil.

He ripped out the middle order taking 4 for 6 in a 5 over spell.  Faisal replaced Fishy and bowled reasonably well.  Sam Humphries in his first senior game kept pretty well especially when keeping to 2nd and 3rd team bowlers.  With Crossers either getting loose or trying to keep warm, Hamish and Bharat took the final 2 wickets.  Lambley all out 69 in 24 overs.

Mummy Babs put on plenty of hot food on at tea to prevent hypothermia.  Wollaton set out to knock off the runs, a number of the opposition were fielding only in short sleeve shirts.  It became quickly obvious that it was not if but when Wollaton would knock them off, as Nas and Fishy were soon rattling along at almost 5 an over.  Fishy was in Caribbean mode getting the hook and pull shots out.  Nas was unlucky to go for 21 as the bowler booted a Fishy straight drive onto the stumps to run him out.  Fishy carried on and with debutante Alistair Hart not over awed, and in the end Wollaton won by 9 wickets after only 16 overs and game over by 5.30pm an excellent result both in the game and due to the early finish to get out of the cold.

Obviously global warming does exist!!
