Wollaton C.C.
v
Radcliffe on Trent C.C.
Newark Alliance Division 3
Sunday 9 May 2010
After the wash out the previous day, Wollaton were glad to get some cricket in. The groundsman had his say so instead of playing on the covered dry wicket, we were using the uncovered regularly used strip on the far side of the square. Crossers was starting to get to know individual blades of grass on this strip, he was playing his third home game, all on the same strip.
Wollaton batted first and Captain Young asked Crossers to keep as he had a broken finger, although the skipper could still open the batting and field at short leg. I will pass no comment at this stage! The skipper opened up with the Wollaton youth policy, Gerald and it was soon clear the wicket was very slow. Both got starts before getting out to let Suman and Crossers put on a stand. Crossers was in milk mode against the loopy leggy, although both Selwood Senior and Leake from the sidelines said he looked like an offy, talk about experts from the sidelines! Crossers was bowled for 20odd before Sunil joined his brother.
The run rate began to rise, Sunil with one 6 but it was mainly due to running between the wickets, quick singles, cheeky twos and numerous threes. Sunil was a yard quicker than his older brother. Sunil went for 30, but Runish carried on the run spree, again not finding the boundary. In the end he would go more knackered than anything, looking like a new lung was required. Suman carried on and would amass an unbeaten 74 containing only one boundary.
All this time Kingy had been pacing up and down, pads on, practising swinging with multiple bats. Seeing all this running he claimed he was going to hit boundaries rather than running. He managed one and then played the daftest shot of the day. The young keeper had taken his pads off (village!) and bowled. He sent down a loopy beamer outside off stump which Kingy tried to reverse clack and missed! Wollaton 225 – 5.
Saq had declared he was going to bowl length and straight so needless to say started with a very wide long hop. He was generally out of sorts claiming indigestion after a large tea. Ed Heath was solid at the other end as was Hasnan who replaced him. The introduction of spin completely changed the game. First Runish and then Kingy completely shut the game down as it was turning ragged, at times making Crossers appear what he is, a very make shift keeper. Once Radcliffe’s opener went for 60odd it was just a matter of time as wickets fell rapidly as Radcliffe struggled against spin.
The tail was eventually cleaned up by Gerry “Apollo” McMahon who wiped out 3 at the death as dark clouds were appearing, Radcliife out for 160odd. Another Sunday victory.
