Wollaton C.C.

v

Long Eaton C.C.

Newark Alliance Division 5

Sunday 30 May 2010

After the washout the previous day, the old “current bun” was out as Sunday 2nd XI entertained Long Eaton.  With only one game being played it was a stronger looking side on paper than the previous week.  Over efficiency from the Dictator of Cricket meant that Wollaton turned up with 12.  Vice captain Fish after a very late night decided he would rather go home to sleep and decided to opt out.  Long Eaton won the toss and rather surprisingly for a Sunday asked Wollaton to bat.

With a strong batting line up a score of at least 200 seemed to be there for the taking, needless to say things did not go to plan.  Naz went early bowled pulling a ball that was not short enough and was replaced by Dr Watson.  The good Dr was originally due at 4, but Rattray the Younger had a whine about not liking no.3 so the Dr took his place, only to tamely chip it to extra cover.  Bill was his usual self at 4 not looking to waste time but having deposited one into the gardens attempted the same shot next ball and played on for 21.  Will Disney after his 50 the previous week  hung around making 15 but he, Sunil, and Naz’s brother Farhan followed in quick succession, Crossers having hoped for a quiet afternoon, came in at 8 in the 19th over to join Runish.

Runish had been watching the mayhem at the other end, having batted very sensibly and he and Crossers tried to repair the damage.  They took the score to 119 in the 30th over before Runish getting extremely frustrated was caught for 48.  Saq joined Crossers who then tried to farm the strike, however due to his total lack of form never really achieved it.  Apart from milking a loopy leggie Crossers struggled to get the ball off the square.  Saq earned the loudest cheer of the day launching a bowler straight back over his head, but he would go at the death looking for runs, quickly followed by Crossers for a very scratchy 32, as Wollaton closed on only 153 – 9.

Saq got rid of one opener in the opening over as he bowled an accurate opening spell.  Farhan at the other end sprayed a lot of deliveries down the left handed opener’s leg side which at least got Crossers moving behind the stumps, but never looked that threatening.  He was replaced by Sunil, who bowled well as although wickets were not coming, Long Eaton never got up with the run rate.  After Saq’s excellent opening spell he was replaced by Ed Heath who should have had a wicket first ball, but Crossers never went for an edge.  This seemed to unsettle Ed who then bowled a series of leg side wides.  Runish replaced Ed but initially Long Eaton kept on chugging along.

From about 70 odd for 1 Long Eaton appeared in control, but Runish then got rid of both batsman, then took another and the scoring dried up.  Sunil made way for the good Dr who with his liquorice all sorts got rid of 2 more batsman.  Hamza got rid of another with his interesting take on leg spin, spectator Hunt was not over impressed with the standard of cricket at this stage.  After Runish’s 8 overs had picked up 3 -19, Saq came back for his last 2 and with the batsman charging him, Crossers in the dim light stood up to him, the run rate was definitely in Wollaton’s favour.

Bill “The Power” Rattray (I am referring to bowling type) managed 2 overs which only went for 5, and then Sunil in the penultimate over took the final wicket well caught by the Dr.  Long Eaton with 1 injured and 1 having left at 630pm fell 18 short.  Wollaton had won but one or two were scratching their heads wondering how.  Now up to second in the league.
