Saturday 12th June
Wollaton 1st XI v Kimberley
The gentleman of Wollaton hosted the players of Caythorpe…..sorry Kimberley on the 12th June at HQ. After a week of rain the gods shined down on the best ground in Nottingham and it was a beautiful day. The crowds flocked for the biggest game of the day…..however someone said a footy game later might attract one or two more fans.
Wollaton won the toss and after a week of rain elected to field on a damp track. Wells and Smith started off for Wollaton and immediately placed the ball in the right areas, Kimberley slipped to 20-2 off 10 overs, with both opening bowlers taking a wicket a piece.
Sewell and Blatherwick aimed to build a partnership however this was broken by Wells after Baltherwick exercised the second type of leave and was duly given out LBW. A small partnership then took place from Sewell and Bacon however to say they were a little unsure how to play Gerry ‘Apollo Creed, Master of disaster, 58 yr old’ McMahon would be an understatement. Gerry finally removed Bacon for 19, who handed skipper Ed ‘don’t drop catches in games’ Savill a simple catch.
Sewell showed excellent professional responsibilities by trying to launch a straight ball over mid on and captain Ogrizovic, obviously excited by the sun after a week of rain, indulged in a bit of BBQing running out his partner. At 80-6 it seemed Kimblthorpe (not sure how I keep getting that wrong) would struggle to reach 100.
Some dogged batting by the lower order result in Cayberley achieving 113, with their resistance ended by some fine bowling from Wells. Highlight of the final overs was 58 yr old Gerry McMahon running captain Ogrizovic out, who didn’t seem too happy with the decision. Onlookers were heard offering him some advice after the dismissal…’don’t back up so far next time kid….’ Or something like that.
A fine tea was had by all.
Wollaton’s innings started badly when Shrestha and Wells departed early to balls that jagged back sharply from burly seamer Adams. Onlookers commented that there was more noise coming from the field than at South Africas first game of the World Cup, it was even confirmed by security staff that a veuvuzala was confiscated from a Kimberley supporter.
Glendenning was next to go with another ball that jagged back. The batsman seemed unhappy with the decision, questioning whether it had hit him inline of the stumps however point, square leg, fine leg, third man and mid wicket were obviously all sure that it was as plum as you like.
Wickets continued to fall regularly with Smith, Dodd and Savill departing in quick succession. Eddie Extras was however battling hard for Wollaton and keeping them in with a sniff of the game. Orgizovic was leading his team into playing hard and I’m sure all the Kimberley supporters were behind his style of leadership when Wollaton were 40-6 (or were they?)
Cooper and Berrisford led a small revival however Cooper, Bayley and McMahon were all to depart leaving Wollaton reeling at 78-9 with only Jack ‘best social secretary ever’ Berrisford and Alex ‘according to AC bottom lip’ King at the crease.
Berrisford and King fought valiantly and managed to build a partnership of 25 for the final wicket and with 10 to win a chance of an unlikely victory was possible. King was however unfortunate to be dismissed and Kimlethorpeberley (I’ll get it right one day) went wild.
2 fine bowling performances from Wells and Adams were the highlight of the day with Kimberley deserving the 20 points.
Wollaton players and supporters enjoyed a drink after the game and watched Robert Green do his impression of Jack Berrisford in the field.
